Workshop IV- TBL (max. 40 participants)

Team-based Learning in practice

Chin-Leong Lim
Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

TBL is a form of flipped classroom teaching that has gained popularity in tertiary education and some institutions have made significant investment in promoting the use of this pedagogy among the faculty members. For example, Team-based Learning (TBL) is the primary pedagogy for all “teaching” components in Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), Nanyang Technological University. All lectures in LKCMedicine are pre-recorded for students to access online before class and classes are conducted using a TBL-approach. However, the benefits of, and preference for TBL remain to be universally accepted and some institutions may find it challenging to implement TBL in their setting. Therefore, The aim of the workshop is to introduce the concept of TBL and demonstrate how TBL can be implemented to teach physiology in higher education. Following a brief introduction on the concepts and model for implementing TBL classes, participants will be organised into small groups to discuss how the same processes can be used or adapted to teach a topic or module of their choice. The discussion will be guided by a series of structured questions / issues to address in designing TBL classes. We hope that through active discussion and the sharing of knowledge, participants will be better equipped to introduce the use of TBL to teach physiology in their respective institutions.
